  Chapter One

  Lobotomy

The stifling air in the dark cell slowly turned colder with that one word. Every beat of Solomon’s heart brought the poison of that word deeper into his mind, until his blood felt like acid and scraped at his bones. He focused on his labored breaths, mentally clinging to the sound, the only lifeline keeping his sanity from being sucked into the halls of the asylum around them.

“Do you know what that is?” The fragile question trembled out of Chaos.

Solomon fought with himself to answer her, to remove the fear that quaked through her body. They’d find a way out, they’d make a way. He wanted—no, he needed to tell her, but his body was gripped with knowing, to the point of tasting it. The harrowing contrast between suffering indefinitely to an unknown degree, and death.

Death had an end, an eventual escape. The other did not. The other meant you remained. You stayed in the grave, alive and aware, unable to speak, unable to cry out in any discernable way, while the world stared and wondered how alive you were or weren’t.

That’s what a lobotomy was to him.

He needed to fight. He needed to fight hard and without stopping. And he needed to do it now, in that foul cell, that very second.

Chaos wailed quietly a few feet away. Solomon used the pitiful sound to break the lobotomy horror that had begun embalming his body in its living grave. He reached into the inky space for her. The darkness was dense, indicating that wherever they were, there was no light except the fleeting one his captors had left with.

“Shhhhhh,” he managed. Hold on tight. This is your focal point, your anchor Solomon’s mind said as he touched her. He obeyed the instinct, not even questioning it. Holding her tight to his body, he stroked his hand over the cold skin of her back and arms.

He continued consoling her with shhhh, shhhh until he realized she wasn’t the one trembling, he was. He’d forgotten about her immunity to the madness around her. He was glad her mind was sheltered and numb to the reality at least.

As though she knew this, knew that she was immune and he wasn’t, her arms went around his upper body and held him in a vicious grip. “I-I’m the Redemptrix Vessel.” The whispered words brushed hot against his chest, as Solomon held her like the lone branch on the wall of a cliff. “I can talk to Master, I can make him choose me,” she said, breathless.

Her words tumbled in his mind and he fought to grab hold of them, of their meaning. “Choose you?” His mouth moved and he heard the words, and yet didn’t. Almost like he was dead… but alive. Trapped in his body.

The sudden terror of losing his mind before the master could take it, jolted panic through him. “No!” he gasped. “He can’t have you! He can’t have me.”

“I don’t want you to suffer,” she choked out bitterly, like there was no option, suffering had to come. The only negotiating might be who the sacrifice would be—her or him. “I’m the Redemptrix Vessel, I messed up. I should be the one to pay. Master always said I was the wild card in this evil game. I was the one to save the town, not you!”

Solomon’s mind and body slowly knit together more tightly. Every second, his ability to think faster and clearer returned like sparks of fire. “You didn’t mess up,” he whispered, shaking her a little. “Nobody messed up. Chaos? Listen, I need you to listen to me.” Solomon gripped her face in the dark and fluttered kisses along her mouth. “I really need you to hear me. I need you to hear me and understand something very deep in your heart and mind for me. Can you do that?”

The barest nod came with her shaky breaths on his lips as she latched her fingers onto his shoulders from behind, pressing her cold breasts against his chest. Solomon gasped at the connection, desperate for any and every kind of bond he could get with her.

“You are my wife now.” He stated the fierce words right on her lips, not wanting anything in that cell to steal them. “I want to take care of you. I want to have children with you, be a family, that’s what I want. Are you hearing me?”

She let out a sob against his mouth and nodded.

“Tell me you want this too. Chaos, you have to tell me—that you want this.”

  “I want this, I want this,” she said bitterly. “But I can’t. I can’t.”

“Yes you can,” he said fervently. “You can. Do you trust me, Beautiful?” Words had never ached and burned inside of Solomon more.

He felt her nod again and Solomon focused his mind, knowing this hour—these seconds—might be his last chance.

“I know that this means a lot to the town, I understand that. I understand that there is a curse that has to be lifted. But did you know…” he said, ideas swirling in his mind, “that when you found me, you found more than the answer to your curse?”

Solomon had kissed her between every other word, and she now struggled to kiss him back, her fingers clutching desperately along his neck. “W…what? Tell me,” she said.

He slipped his fingers beneath her hair and cradled her head while she pressed soft innocent kisses on his mouth. “I’m here to end the curse,” he said. The urgency in her lips made him even more desperate to convince her that they had to live.

“Yes,” she whispered, her kisses hotter now.

Solomon followed the tightly woven fabric of lies in her mind while being careful not to move too quickly and suddenly. The last thing he needed was to push her into a mental place that might break her. Keeping his kisses fervent, he continued, “It’s finally so very clear to me, Beautiful. I was brought here to help Master. I think you knew, you knew all along, and that’s why I was picked. Because I would be able to help set it all right.”

“Yes, you’re the one.” Her fingers raked through his hair as he moved his mouth along her face to her ear.

“Master doesn’t realize it…” he said, building his case for their survival. “He’s been taken by the curse. That’s why I was called here, I was called not just to save the town, but to save Master too. Master isn’t a bad man, but the curse is trying to take him.”

She gave little moans, her lips kissing along his neck. “He’s very good.”

Solomon gritted his teeth as acid rose in his throat at her words. But she wasn’t hearing what he needed her to. “I know he is. I know you’re good too, I’ve known
this since I met you.” Her lips were on his chest now and he gasped when her mouth covered his nipple and sucked with a sweet hunger. His cock decided to come alive at that moment, desperate to survive, to live, and love her.

But the only way to have that was for Chaos to belong to him in an irrefutable way, indebted to him, obedient to him. Not Master. That would require him to undo a lifetime of brainwashing, and the only thing he had to do that with was their love.

It was their only chance. He’d have to use it to burn it all down, burn this hell down.

“I’m here to take over,” he whispered as her hungry kisses continued down his body.

The sudden idea that she may have put her mouth on that monster in this intimate way locked him in silent fury. He pulled her up and kissed her, letting his desperation come through in his passion. “I am here to take you over, do you understand me? You are my wife, you are mine. You belong to me now. Master gave you to me, he cannot change it now, this is an eternal law. Do you understand?”

She nodded, gasping on his face as he held her head between both hands and sucked along her jaw, her lips, then neck. “I’m yours,” she whispered weakly. “I’m yours.”

He went back to her mouth. “I know you are,” he said, showing her just how much he knew, needing her to feel and see how much he knew it. “I’m called to spend the rest of my life with you, loving you, do you hear me? Nobody and nothing can change that.”

Her answer came as a weak moan and Solomon drew on every ounce of his desire and buried lusts to drive the truth home so that no power or person on earth could revoke it, especially not Master. “Your beautiful body,” he said against her mouth, his fingers gliding over the tight peak of her breast, “is mine to love. All mine.” He lowered and sucked as much of the soft mound as he could.

  “Yes,” she cried.

The conviction in that gasped word drove Solomon’s hunger to hear it again, to double its power. He sucked her breast harder, grazing the firm tip with his teeth, until more confirmations poured from her lips and she arched into his hungry mouth. “Yes, yes,” she cried, pulling his hair.

He covered her mouth with his again, his fingers digging into her upper back as his tongue and lips continued to declare the burning truth. “You’re my wife. You’re my wife. You’re mine. All mine, nobody else. Say it, say it to me. I have to hear you say it.”

“I’m yours. I’m your wife, nobody else, only yours.” She whispered it with passion right on his mouth, just the way he needed her to.

  “Promise,” he insisted.

“I promise. I promise, with all my heart, I promise.”

Solomon kissed his way down her neck, ready to seal and protect their fate with the only weapon they had—love. He held both her breasts in his hands, sucking from one to the other. It was there in the sounds of her every breath and moan, the frantic need for Solomon to save her, save them, save their future. It fueled him with an insane urge, the kind that didn’t know reason or logic, only desperation. Survive. That’s what it knew. And he didn’t deny it, he embraced it with all his might, right there, while all the insane ghosts of the past watched them fumble desperately for a lifeline leading out. Watched them in a silent knowing—knowing that there was none. Not one. Not ever.

He wouldn’t believe that. He couldn’t. He didn’t.

Solomon made his way reverently along her body, his fingers stroking over the soft hair of her womanhood. At hearing her breath hitch oddly, he froze.

“H-h-h-h-he finally p-p-prepared me,” she half whimpered.

Dread slowly gripped him before he wrapped her tight in his arms, hot fury fighting to tear out of him. Mental flashes stabbed his brain of what was done to her—delicate flesh sliced open without care. Oh God. His stomach lurched as his mind suddenly connected the smell that had been in his nostrils since he’d gotten there. Blood. Fresh and dried, no doubt caking her inner thighs all the way to her feet.

Oh God, help me. Help me. Don’t let me crack, don’t let me break. I beg you. I beg you.

“I-I can still…” She gripped his cock in trembling hands and Solomon grabbed them, preventing her from trying to lower to her knees.

“Not if you can’t,” he whispered fiercely in her ear while holding her tight to his chest, forcing back the monster roars clawing at his chest. “Together. Always together, we love together. If you can’t, I can’t, do you understand me?!” he demanded, his mouth still on her ear. “We love together, always together. As one. As one!”

He clenched his eyes tight while hugging her in a desperate embrace. Her nails bit into his neck as she trembled against him. “I love you!” Her words gushed on a sob, giving way to an avalanche of them. “I’m sorry,” she said, sounding wretched and broken. “I didn’t know. I didn’t know I would love you. I didn’t know how much that hurt, I didn’t!”

“It doesn’t have to hurt,” he strained, stroking her back. “I swear it.”

The frantic bite of her nails moved to his shoulders now. “But it does! It hurts! More than any pain. I can’t stand it! I don’t want to love you, I can’t stand it!” she shrieked, pushing out of his arms.

“Chaos, stop,” he begged, reaching in the dark for her. “We need to be strong. Together. Don’t regret our love, don’t you dare.”

“I want to hate you,” she screamed louder. “I want to hate you!”

“You’re not meant to hate me,” he roared into the dark, fighting despair. “You’re meant to love me!” he said, his voice breaking.

The sobs took her again until she was wailing like a sad child. “I suffered already,” she said between jagged breaths. “I-I suffered everything just right. I graduated,” she went on, sounding confused. “I graduated, and there wasn’t supposed to be anymore, no more suffering.” The final words came on a long wail. “I can’t suffer this… Not this. I’m not strong enough. I can’t suffer this one. I can’t, I can’t, I’m so sorrrrrryyyyy.”

Solomon groped for her in the darkness and latched on to her shaking body. “Okay, it’s okay,” he whispered, holding her tight. How could she be so good? So beautiful? Her entire life she’d suffered unspeakable pain, all to help others. All for others. And now, it was his suffering that she couldn’t take and was willing to take for him. Always the giver.

He stroked her back, refusing to think of the atrocities she’d endured in the name of doing what was right. To help. “I love you, Beautiful, do you know that? I’ve waited all my life for you,” he said, swallowing down emotion. He remembered a time, not long ago, when he’d have felt guilty for saying that, but he knew his fiancée, wherever she was, alive or dead, would understand.

He tilted her face to his in the dark and kissed her softly. She was the one. She was the one he was destined to be with. In that second, he felt the truth so hard and hot inside him. Even if it was only for a week. He prayed it was for a hundred years, but at this point, he wasn’t sure of the future. He was only sure of the moment.

The urgency filled him to learn as much as he could as quickly as he could. A second later, realization hit him. It dawned on him in quick succession, like a picture book flipping in his mind. How he’d met Chaos. How Master had strategically put her in his life. How he’d trained her to never have pleasure, never have love…. Oh fuck. Solomon gasped and held her tighter. That bastard had intended this. He’d intended this very thing, her falling in love and having to suffer losing him.

But why? Why was the master such a sick bastard? Why did he hate her so much to do this?

“Can you do one thing for me, Beautiful?” He kissed her forehead over and over. “Can you tell me some things so I understand? So I know how to fix all this?”

“You can’t fix it,” she said in a small defeated voice.

“I can.” He made his voice firm as he stroked the hair next to her face. “I can, that’s why I’m here, remember? It’s so important that you remember that. Listen to me,” he said louder, making her focus. “Now is not the time to give up,
do you hear me? How long have you trained for this?”

“Since… I was six.” The words were calm but came between random hitches in her breath.

Solomon held her, stroking her back. “That’s a long time. You’re nearly done, you can’t give up right at the end. You can’t.” When she nodded, he continued on, “We just need to understand everything that’s going on and see the best way to handle it. So… I’m going to need you to tell me what you think will happen from this point on, can you do that for me?”

“I don’t want to,” she whispered, her voice thick and sounding scared.

At hearing the dread, he took hold of her face and kissed her, long and softly. “I need you to. I need you. Please. I have to know so we can plan.”

  “Plan what?”

  “A way to fix this.”

“But it can’t be stopped,” she barely said.

“Not stop it, fix it,” he urged quickly. “I need to save Master from doing the wrong thing, remember? Remember, the curse has a hold on him and it’s trying to make him do the wrong thing? That’s how curses work, they slowly get hold of people and make them think they’re doing right when really, they’re not. How long has Master been planning to break the curse?”

“A… a long time,” she said, back to half-sobbing against his chest.

“Right. A very long time, plenty of time for the curse to take him, see? That’s what curses do, Chaos, they do what it takes to prevent from being broken, and Master is only human. It’s not his fault. It’s not.” He grit his teeth at the gross lie. “But you, you’re special, remember? You have gifts, just like me, and they tell you when something is wrong. I just need you to think back for me.” Solomon knew it was only a wager, but he was willing to bet all on this one thing. “Think back to the very first thing that made you feel wrong in here.” Solomon touched her chest over her heart.

“The bad questions?” she asked, sounding worried and guilty.

Solomon angled his head in the dark, his heart racing with hope. “Is that what Master called them?”
